Support for disabled students in the United Kingdom
Support for disabled students in the UK is provided through education institutions and charities across the UK in many different forms.
Education institutions are required by law to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to their services to ensure that disabled students are not placed at a ‘substantial disadvantage’. Education institutions are also required by law to have a Disability Equality Scheme that sets out how they will ensure disability equality for staff and students at their institution. All education institutions have a Disability Co-ordinator who can help disabled students whilst they are studying at that institution.
National and local charities also provide advice and support for disabled students. Skill: National Bureau for Students with Disabilities provides advice to disabled students and also publishes a booklet listing these charities called ‘Organisations offering advice or services to disabled people’. To access this booklet, visit www.skill.org.uk, click on ‘information sheets’ then ‘other resources’.
