The numbers given in this table are restricted to pupils in special schools and pupils integrated in mainstream classes.
There are no special classes within mainstream schools in Flemish Belgium, financed or subsidised in a different way than other mainstream classes except for reception classes for pupils who do not speak Dutch (around 2,700 pupils in primary and secondary education every school year).
From the 2002-2003 school year all the former temporary projects in mainstream primary and secondary schools were integrated into one support provision. 2/3 of primary schools and nearly 1/2 of secondary schools get additional resources for pupils from less favourable social, cultural and/or economic situations (in primary and secondary education around 170,000 pupils are involved). |

| Legal Definition of SEN |
Special education is defined as: "education, based on a pedagogical project that provides adapted schooling, care and therapy for pupils whose general personal development cannot be or can insufficiently be guaranteed, temporarily or permanently, in an ordinary school.” 8 types of special education are distinguished. The same categorisation is used for funding integrated education.
