Compulsory age phase Compulsory education in the country covers ages between 6 to 15 years (six years for primary and three for secondary lower level education.
Primary Education (Dimotiko, 6 - 12 years) includes general and special schools (public and private).
Secondary education. low level (Gymnasio 12 - 15 years) includes general, special schools for music, religion, athletic activities and special education (public and private).
Clarification of Public - Private sector education Parallel to public schools, private schools operate as non-profit making organisations. Private schools provide compulsory education at all levels and accept fees that are subject to the state’s approval. Private schools are recognized as equivalent to state schools and follow the same procedures and curricula as the state schools. They operate within the framework of the Ministry of Education. This applies the same administrative and educational strategy (as applied in public schools) with regard to school programmes, examinations, assessment process, certificates, etc. In addition to the general school programmes, private schools may provide more teaching hours for other lessons and extra curricular activities.
