| The
legal limits of compulsory schooling, from age 6 to 16, are now largely
exceeded both in legal texts and in practice. Thus, it must be possible
for every child to attend school at the age of 3. Attendance of 2-year old
children is given priority in socially underprivileged environments. Moreover, every pupil who has not reached the required level of education after this period of compulsory schooling is entitled to continue in school. Education is divided into three teaching levels : - Nursery school till the end of elementary school includes 3 cycles spread over 8 to 9 years. - - All pupils are admitted to the "collège" (the first stage of secondary education) which also includes 3 cycles spread over 4 years. - - At the end of the collège, three options are available : a general, technical, or vocational lycée. One 3-year cycle brings the pupil to the "baccalauréat" (A Level Certificate), opening the way to a professional career or to university studies. In 1998, the number of pupils in the educational system totaled 11, 810, 300, i.e. 6,337,400 in primary school and 5,472,000 in secondary school. For further detailed
