Primary teachers are trained for three years in Colleges of
Education. Candidates for training must have reached a designated standard
in the State Leaving Certificate Examination. These colleges are affiliated
to Universities. On successful completion of the courses teachers are awarded
the degree of Bachelor of Education. They are then qualified to teach in
primary and special schools.
Most second-level teachers are university-trained. They generally take a
basic (Bachelor) degree over three or four years and then attend a one-year
full-time university course leading to a Higher Diploma in Education. Teachers
of Home Economics, Art and Design and Catechetics are trained in specialist
colleges. |
