Basic teacher training.
Under legislation passed in 1990, nursery and primary teachers will all be trained via a 4 year
academic and teacher training continuous programme of study.

All compulsory age phase teachers must pass a teachers' examination (concorso) in order to
obtain permanent teacher status.

Lower secondary and post compulsory age phase teachers are required to have obtained a
university degree or diploma in their specialist curriculum subject. All these teachers must pass
a teachers' examination ("concorso") in order to obtain permanent teacher status.

Under the 1990 legislation, specialisation courses will be available at postgraduate schools that
lead to a diploma required for permanent teaching status.

Teachers are legally required to undertake in-service training.
