delegation from Italy, along with representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Agencydelegation from Italy, along with representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Agency

On 8 November 2017, the Agency hosted a meeting with representatives from the ‘Europe begins in Lampedusa’ project. Mr Renato Girelli from the European Commission, Mr Raffaele Ciambrone, representative from the Italian Ministry and Agency Representative Board member, and Mr Tareke Brhane, President of ‘Comitato 3 Ottobre’, together with a delegation of learners and teachers from three Italian secondary schools from Lampedusa, Rome and Trieste, attended the Agency’s Brussels Office.

Following this meeting, the delegation was received in the European Parliament (EP) by Ms Cécile Kyenge, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Co-President of the EP's Anti-Racism and Diversity Intergroup, and Mr David Sassoli, MEP and Vice-President of the EP.

During the Parliament meeting, Mr Raffaele Ciambrone introduced the ‘Europe begins in Lampedusa’ project to a number of MEPs and other participants. He highlighted the Agency’s role as a bridge between the ministries of education and in involving European representatives. Mr Ciambrone talked about the symbolic and social value of the ‘Museum of Trust and Dialogue for the Mediterranean’, launched in 2016.

Mr Brhane explained the role of the ‘Comitato 3 Ottobre’ and praised the Italian government’s commitment to establishing 3 October as the official ‘Day of Memory and Hospitality’. This day commemorates the shipwreck off Lampedusa in 2013, in which 368 men, women and children lost their lives. Mr Brhane proposed making 3 October a Europe-wide Day of Memory and Hospitality.

The learners participating in the meeting explained their involvement in the project. They showed the short films that they created, based on their research about migration and activities involving refugees.

During the meeting, all MEPs showed interest in the project and were in favour of hospitality and dialogue among people of different cultures. The MEPs expressed support for further initiatives in this framework, possibly with the Agency’s involvement.
