1 How many school aged children are there at: 543,166 244,346 Single Year of Age Population Estimates at 1 January 2015, sourced from the Irish Central Statistics Office (CSO) ISCED 1: Figure includes all children from age 4 to age 11. Compulsory education starts at age 6, but children can start primary education at age 4. The vast majority of 5-year-olds are enrolled in primary education, as are approximately 40% of 4-year-olds. ISCED 2: Figure includes all children from age 12 to age 15. Pupils typically start post-primary education at age 12 and follow a three-year programme.
2 How many pupils are enrolled in all formal educational settings in: 544,856 189,400 ISCED 1: National School Annual Census 2014/2015, Private Primary Census 2014/2015. ISCED 2: Administrative Data returns, October returns (annual post-primary school return to the Department of Education), Youthreach (programme for young people who have dropped out of school) The discrepancy between the number of children enrolled and the population is largely due to: (a) those 4-year-olds who are in pre-primary education rather than primary education and (b) over 50% of 12-year-olds being in primary school and there may also be some 16-year-olds enrolled in ISCED 2 not included here.
3 How many pupils are out of any formal educational settings in: 497 232 Department of Education and Skills statistics 2014/15 These include pupils who receive home tuition on the basis of medical conditions, school anxiety issues and who have special educational needs and have no school place. It is not possible to get figures on the number of children who are educated in the home based on parental choice.
