Question ISCED 1 ISCED 2 Sources used Notes
How many school aged children are there at: 403,180 217,908 Population estimates produced by National Records of Scotland. Age at 30 June 2015 Ages used are 5–11 for ISCED 1 and 12–15 for ISCED 2. However, it should be noted that pupils born in March–July will start school in the August following their fifth birthday. Also, while children born from September to February can start school in the August after their fourth birthday (i.e. not yet 5), they are able to defer entry until the August after their fifth birthday.
How many pupils are enrolled in all formal educational settings in: 397,115 216,642 2014 pupil census for those in publicly-funded secondary schools; 2014 independent census for those in independent schools Collected in September 2014 for the 2014/15 school year. Pupils in special schools are split by age: under 12 (ISCED) 1 and 12–15 (ISCED 2). Pupils in mainstream schools are split by primary (ISCED 1) and stage S1–S4 (first four years of secondary – ISCED 2). The ages of pupils in primary and secondary stages may vary slightly, with some pupils being slightly older or younger than their peers. Therefore, ISCED 1 includes small numbers of pupils (in both publicly-funded and independent schools) aged under 5 and over 11 and ISCED 2 includes a small number of pupils aged under 12 or over 15. Independent school pupil data collected by year of birth and school type, so special school data includes those born after 2003 for ISCED 1 and 2000–2003 for ISCED 2. All the information on pupils relates to those in formal education.
How many pupils are out of any formal educational settings in: NA NA This data is not collected. It includes children educated outside of schools (i.e. in hospital or at home).
How many pupils are enrolled in mainstream formal educational settings with their non-disabled peers in: 394,310 213,649 2014 pupil census for those in publicly-funded secondary schools; 2014 independent census for those in independent schools This includes those on the roll of independent and publicly-funded mainstream schools.
